“Calcified Koala” – wins The Roland B. Snow Award

The team, led by BioInnocation research group students, took first place in the The Roland B. Snow Award for the Best Poster in the Ceramographic Exhibit & Competition 2020. This is an annual poster exhibit organized by the American Ceramic Society to promote the use of microscopy and microanalysis as tools in scientific investigation. The team members were: Mehnaz Urbee Jahangir, Farhana Islam Oishi. The team was supervised by Dr Tarik Arafat (Professor, BME, BUET).

There were five categories in the competition, and the submitted poster was not only selected as the 1st prize in the category (undergraduate studies), but also selected among all submissions as the Best in Show Winner and is recognized with the 2020 Roland B. Snow Award. The poster, titled “Calcified Koala,” is based on the work of Mehnaz and Oishi, where the cluster of synthesized hydroxyapatite particles gives an illusion of a koala holding onto a branch of a tree.

Nevertheless, the 2nd prize in the undergraduate category also goes to Mehnaz and Oishi. We had two submissions.
